Box Score 1 The Alma College Softball team hosted Trine University on Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader at Scots Park and dropped both games to the Thunder. Game one went to Trine by a score of 1-0 and the visitors took the nightcap 6-4. With the two losses, the Scots are now 19-7 overall and 7-3 in the MIAA, while Trine improved to 3-1 in the league and 21-5 in 2012.
The opener was a matchup of two of the best pitchers in the MIAA and score certainly illustrated that claim. Jr. Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All-Saints) started in the circle for the Scots, while Andi Gasco through for the Thunder.
Alma had several chances to score as they notched four hits and earned seven walks, but they could not push a run across in the loss. For the game, the Scots left ten runners on base, while the Thunder stranded six. But, Trine got the one hit that mattered when Tori Cuebas hit a homerun in the top of the fourth that proved to the game winner.
Rezmer went all seven innings in the loss, giving up four hits, one walk with 10 strikeouts. Jr. 2B Kayla Smart (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) went two for three at the plate for the Scots in the opener.
The nightcap started strong for the Scots as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Jr. LF Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Sr. 1B Emily Ross (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) walked, Sr. C Becca Dewyse (Bay City, Mich./All-Saints) singled scoring Schneider. A single by Jr. 2B Kayla Smart (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) scored Ross and finally, a base hit by Fr. SS Devan Olah (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) pushed home pinch runner Fr. Tricia Smith (Morley, Mich./Morley-Stanwood).
Alma added another run in the top of the second after Schneider singled and advanced to third on a hit by Ross. Dewyse then reached on error by the Trine third baseman that scored Schneider for a 4-0 Scots lead.
However, it all went downhill for the Scots after that point in the game. Trine scored three runs in the bottom of the third on a three-run homer by Gasco and added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to secure their 6-4 advantage. That was enough for the Thunder as they held on for the win, even though the Scots again stranded 10 runners on base.
Schneider led the Scots by going two for four with two runs scored and Rezmer started and pitched five innings. She took the loss by giving up four earned runs on eight hits and had two strikeouts. Fr. Allison Rigling (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) pitched a scoreless sixth for the Scots.
Alma will next play on Saturday when they host Albion College for Senior Day 2012 at Scots Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
