Box Score 2 The Alma Softball team, the defending MIAA Champions, opened up the 2012 home season this afternoon when they hosted Anderson University at the new Scots Park. Alma, under the direction of long-time Head Coach Denny Griffin, split on Tuesday and are now 11-3 thus far in 2012.
Today's doubleheader was a very exciting day for the Scots softball program as they celebrated their new ballpark. Renovations for the new Scots Park include new dugouts, home run fence, scoreboard and press box.
"It was very exciting for us to unveil the new Scots Park this afternoon," said Alma College Athletic Director John Leister. "This beautiful new ballpark is something that Denny and this successful program has deserved for some time. It will be a great new venue for this team and for many Alma College softball players in the future."
In game one, Anderson scored one run in the second inning and two in the third and made the 3-0 advantage hold up for a victory. Jr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, Mich./Bay City All-Saints) pitched seven innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs. She had seven strikeouts and three walks in the loss to the Ravens.
In the nightcap, Fr. P Samantha Pierce (Clarkdale, Mich./Michigan City) pitched a complete game to record the win. She gave up five hits, allowing two earned runs and struck out five Anderson batters.
Jr. OF Amanda Schneider (North Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) went one for three with a run scored and one run batted in. Sr. 1B Emily Ross (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) also went one for three with a run and an RBI. Jr. IF Kayla Smart (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) finished the game going for two for three with an RBI., as the Scots came away with the 5-2 victory.
Alma next plays on Thursday afternoon, when they host Ohio Northern University at Scots Park, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
