Box Score 2 After falling down 6-0 against Trine University in a NCAA Tournament Regional in Adrian, MI, the Scots tied the game in the seventh, only to see Trine score in the bottom half for a 7-6 victory. The loss ends Alma's season at 35-8, while the Thunder advance after improving their record to 30-12.
Even with the big early deficit, the Scots did not give up and fought all the way back for the tie, and chances to take the lead. However, Alma was eliminated when an errant third pitch of an intentional walk went awry, allowing the winning Trine run to come across the plate.
"This year's trademark has been our ability to come back and not hang our heads," said Alma Head Coach Denny Griffin. "We battled back and to see a senior like P Tara Leddy (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) toss a wild pitch to end her career was heartbreaking. I'm very proud of our team and in particular the senior class for their commitment to the program."
The Scots fell behind 3-0 in the first inning after they thought they had gotten out of the frame. Alma So. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, MI/Bay City All Saints) took a couple of steps toward the first base dugout, thinking her 3-2 pitch had punched out Tara Sipperley on strikes to end the first inning.
Sipperley was issued first base on a walk, and Andi Gasco and Lauren Harris followed with home runs to give Trine the advantage. Trine extended the margin to 6-0 on Sarah Belote's three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning.
The Scots started to comeback against Trine in the top of the fourth inning, when Jr. Becca DeWyse (Bay City, MI/Bay City All Saints) launched her third home run of the season. Sr. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler, MI/Fowler), who led off the inning with a single, also scored on the play.
Two Trine errors helped Alma load the bases in the fifth, but Thunder pitcher Gasco extinguished the threat by inducing a groundball to the shortstop to force the runner trying to advance to second for the third out.
A third Trine error, this one on the leadoff batter in the sixth, was enough to help Alma plate two runs. Jr. 1B Emily Ross (Buchanan, MI/Buchanan)Jr. 2B Erin Pintek (Flushing, MI/Flushing) scored on a wild pitch and lifted a sacrifice fly to score Fr. PR Chanler McCaskey (Morenci, MI/Morenci).
The fourth Trine error, to the leadoff batter in the seventh, brought the tying run to the plate. The threat seemed to lose momentum when the next batter grounded to Gasco to start a 1-6-3 double play. The Scots kept battling asKoenigsknecht drew a walk, Jr. SS Lauren Davis (Marysville, MI/Marysville) followed with a single through the right side of the infield, and Ross checked her swing on a 3-2 pitch to draw a walk.
The margin was trimmed to a run when Dewyse walked on a 3-2 pitch to score Koenigsknecht. Fr. PR Grace Westerman (Gaylord, MI/ St. Mary's) scored the tying run when Amanda Schneider walked on a 3-2 pitch.
However, when Trine was able to score the final run to claim the victory, the season ended for the Scots. With it, three seniors - 3B Erika Brower (Allegan, MI/Allegan), Koenigsknecht and Leddy - played their last games for Alma College.
Their contributions will not be forgotten and their legacy will live long.
