#8 Alma Softball takes two games from Calvin College today in Grand Rapids

Alma's Softball team, ranked #8 in the country, took on Calvin College Monday afternoon in Grand Rapids and came away with two victories - by scores of 4-0 in the first game and 6-1 in the nightcap. The Scots improved to 11-1 in the MIAA and 28-3 overall, while the Knights fell to 4-8 in the league and 6-24 in 2011.

In the first game, the Scots scored a run in the top of the first, as Sr. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler, MI/Fowler) singled to lead off the game, advanced to second on a stolen base, and scored an unearned run on a bunt by Jr. LF Camille Dittmar (Highland, MI/Milford).

Alma made the score 3-0 with two runs in the second frame. Jr. SS Lauren Davis (Marysville, MI/Marysville) walked and scored on a double by Sr. 3B Erika Brower (Allegan, MI/Allegan). Brower then crossed the plate when Koenigsknecht doubled her home.

The Scots completed the 4-0 victory with an additional run in the top of the fifth inning, starting with a walk by Jr. 1B Emily Ross (Buchanan, MI/Buchanan). After a passed ball, So. Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, MI/Anchor Bay) knocked in Ross with a single.

Sr. P Tara Leddy (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) earned her 50th career collegiate win, as she pitched a complete game shut-out. Leddy gave up only two hits and had no walks in the victory.

In the nightcap, Alma scored all six of their runs in the first four innings en route to the 6-1 win and the doubleheader sweep. For the game, runs batted in were earned by Davis (two), Ross, Schneider, Brower and Jr. C Becca DeWyse (Bay City, MI/Bay City All-Saints).

In the circle, So. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, MI/Bay City All Saints), pitched all seven innings to pick up the win. She gave up just three hits and struck out seven batters in the victory.

Alma is scheduled to continue play on Tuesday afternoon against Kalamazoo College at Scots Park. The games, weather permitting, will start at 3:30 p.m.
