The Alma Softball team, ranked #21 in the country, took on #13 Adrian College on Monday at Scots Park. As you would expect, it was a entertaining doubleheader that saw each team win a one-run game. Alma took the first one 5-4, while the Bulldogs prevailed in the second contest, 7-6.

The Scots are now 7-1 in the MIAA and 24-3 overall, while the Bulldogs are now 6-2 in the league and 28-2 for the 2011 season.

In game one, Adrian took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning on three hits and one Alma error. The Scots answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning, as Jr. C Becca DeWyse (Bay City, MI/Bay City All-Saints) and Jr. DP Erin Pintek (Flushing, MI/Flushing) each had RBI's.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, and the Bulldogs held the 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Sr. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler, MI/Fowler) and Jr. 1B Emily Ross (Buchanan, MI/Buchanan) were at first and second with one out as DeWyse came to the plate.

DeWyse doubled down the left field line and both runs scored, giving the Scots the come-from-behind 5-4 victory. Sr. P Tara Leddy (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) pitched all seven innings, giving up three earned runs with six srikeouts, to improve to 12-0 on the season.

In the nightcap, Adrian jumped on Alma starting So. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, MI/Bay City All Saints) for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Scots fought back with two runs in the top of the third, before the Bulldogs scored three more in the bottom half of the frame for a 6-2 advantage.

Adrian added their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 7-2 lead. The Scots scored three runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 7-5 game, with the big hits being a double by Koenigsknecht and a triple by Ross.

In the top of the seventh, Alma rallied with one out and cut the deficit to 7-6 on a hit and an Adrian error. But, with runners on second and third with two outs, the Scots were unable to get the hit to win the game, falling to the Bulldogs.

Alma continues their season on Wednesday, when they travel to Trine to take on the Thunder.
