Box Score The Alma Men's Soccer team continued play on a gloriously sunny and warm Wednesday afternoon at Scotland Yard, when they hosted MIAA rival Albion College. The Scots walked off the pitch with a hard-fought 1-0 victory to improve to 2-4 in the league and 5-6 overall, while the Britons are now 5-5-1 in 2011 and 2-4 in the MIAA.
The game was scoreless for most of the first half as both teams played things close to the vest, not wanting to make a mistake that would cost them a goal. But, at the 39:26 mark, Sr. M/F Eric Foster (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) streaked towards the net and received a pass from Fr. D Nicholas Peper (Northville, Mich./Northville). Foster took that pass and buried into the net behind Albion GK Brian Greathouse for the 1-0 advantage.
Foster and Peper celebrate their connection that gave the Scots the 1-0 lead over Albion on Wednesday
In the second half, Albion put on a lot of pressure trying to get the equalizer, but the Scots played solid defense and held the Britons off for the 1-0 league win. So. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) made three saves to earn the win in net for the home team.
Foster, Peper and Fr. D Joonas Kotka (Jallinn, Estonia) had a shot on goal a piece for Alma, who next play at Calvin on Saturday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Scots' next home game will be on October 15, Homecoming, when they host Trine University at 2:30 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
