Box Score On a rainy, windy and cold Thursday afternoon, the Alma Women's Soccer team hosted Trine University in a MIAA contest at a soggy Scotland Yard field. The Scots defeated the Thunder by a score of 1-0, improving to 10-2-1 in the league and 14-2-1 overall, while the visitors walked off the pitch with a MIAA mark of 1-10-2 and are 3-11-2 in 2011.
"We did a very good job defensively today, as we eliminated any dangerous shots and holding them to just four shots total is very good," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We have now tied a school record with 14 wins and have a school high of 10 shutouts and that is great. But, our girls have other things on their radar screen as we move forward. Saturday is a big game against a Kalamazoo team that is playing well. There is a lot at stake in terms of the playoff standings, and our girls are excited for the challenge."
On a sloppy field, both teams treaded water (literally) early in the contest, trying to get a feel for how they could attack and defend with the conditions. Alma was able to find the back of the net at 34:30, when So. D Ann Kennedy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) scored on a corner kick from Fr. MF Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) for the eventual final 1-0 advantage.
The Scots made the first half goal hold up, as they held the Thunder to no shots on goal, and only four overall in the win. Alma had 11 shots on goal in the game, led by Sr. M Annette Stromberg's (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) three, followed by Sr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) and Fr. M/F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel), who each had two shots on goal.
Alma hits the road on Saturday to take on Kalamazoo College, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex.
A NOTE TO PARENTS: The Reserve game against Kellogg Community College, scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, has been canceled.
