Scots Softball takes two from Albion, 5-1, 13-5

The Alma Softball team continued MIAA action on Monday afternoon against league foe Albion College at Scots Park. Alma came away victorious in both contests, by scores of 5-1 and 13-5 respectively. The wins improved the Scots to 17-5 overall in 2010 and 4-0 in the MIAA, while the Britons fell to 0-7 in league play and 6-15 on the season.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Alma scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, as So. C Becca DeWyse (Bay City, MI/Bay City All Saints), Jr. 3B Erika Brower (Allegan, MI/Allegan) and Fr. DP Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, MI/Anchor Bay) each had RBI's.

With one out in the fourth inning, DeWyse crushed a homerun over the leftfield wall to give the Scots a 4-0 advantage. The Britons scored a run in the top half of the sixth inning to make it 4-1, before Jr. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler, MI/Fowler) knocked in PR Jr. Chelsea Jensen (Sparta, MI/Sparta) for the final run in the 5-1 win.

Jr. P Tara Leddy (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) improved to 7-2 on the season by throwing a complete game victory. She gave up eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. DeWyse was three for three with the two RBI's, while Brower went two for two in the first game.

In the nightcap, Jr. P Brittany Grys (Portland, MI/Portland) pitched a complete game and the Scots pounded out 13 hits in the 11-5 victory. Alma scored one run in the top of the first inning and Albion answered with two in their half of the frame. But the Scots scored the next 12 runs in the game, en route to the sweep.

Four players had two hits each for Alma, with DeWyse having three RBI's and a second homerun on the afternoon. Sr. SS Houston Verbeck (Burton, MI/Flint Kearsley) had two of those hits and two RBI's, while So. DP Lauren Davis (Marysville, MI/Marysville) had her first collegiate RBI in the victory. Sr. LF Kelsey Rightenburg (Lexington, MI/Croswell-Lexington) also had two hits and an RBI.

The team is scheduled to make-up a rain-out doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Hope College. Fans and parents are encouraged to check the website, as the weather forecast is not favorable. The Scots are next scheduled to play at Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon.
