Alma Softball takes two from Hope to keep their lead in MIAA standings with four games to go; wins 9-1 and 6-5

The Scots' Softball team hit the road on Tuesday to play two games against Hope College in a doubleheader that was rescheduled because of rain earlier this month. Alma defeated the host Flying Dutch in both games, by scores of 9-1 and 6-5. After the sweep of Hope, Alma is now 10-2 in the MIAA and 25-7 overall, with four games remaining in the regular season.

The first game was scoreless until the top of fourth inning, but the Scots were able to score six runs in the next two frames to take command. Houston Verbeck homered to start the Scots' fourth and the visitors got RBI's from Kelsey Rightenburg, Erika Brower and Dana Fend en route to the victory. Pitcher Tara Leddy improved to 10-4 with the complete game and struck out three on the afternoon.

In the nightcap, Alma jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, assisted by three Hope errors, but Emily Ross and Sarah Johnson had RBI's as the Scots completed the sweep. Hope scored two runs in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the seventh to make it interesting.

At the end of the day, Alma won 6-5, as Brittany Grys earned a save for Louise Rezmer. The Scots will host Olivet College on Wednesday at Scots Park in a league doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
