Alma Softball splits two games at Saint Mary's

Alma's Softball team split a doubleheader against MIAA rival Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon. The host Belles defeated the Scots by a score of 4-3 in nine innings in the first game, but the Scots rebounded and defeated the home team by a score of 13-5 in five innings in the nightcap. Alma is now 5-1 in the MIAA and 18-6 overall, while the Belles are also 5-1 in league play and 16-10 in 2010.

In the first game, Saint Mary's won when Lauren Enayati scored on a hit by Ashley Peterson in the bottom half of the ninth inning for the dramatic win. Alma Jr. P Tara Leddy (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) took the loss, as she gave up 11 hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The Scots had nine hits in the game, three from Jr. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler, MI/Fowler), but came up short in the loss. Sr. LF Kelsey Rightenburg (Lexington, MI/Croswell-Lexington) and Sr. SS Houston Verbeck (Burton, MI/Flint-Kearsley) added two hits in the game.

In the nightcap, Alma took care of business and came away with the 13-5 win in five innings. The Scots fell behind 3-1 in the top of the second inning, as the host Belles, visitors in game two, notched three runs. However, Alma scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back en route to the win.

Sr. RF Sarah Johnson (Portland, MI/Portland) went four for four in the game with four RBI's and three runs scored, while Koenigsknecht added two hits and and a homerun in the win. Rightenburg had three hits and an RBI, while So. 1B Emily Ross (Buchanan, MI/Buchanan) added three hits and runs of her own.

Fr. P Louise Rezmer (Essexville, MI/Bay City All Saints) got the win to improve to 5-2 on the year, while at the plate, Verbeck had three RBI's and Sr. 2B Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge, MI/Grand Ledge) went two for four with two RBI's. Alma will host Trine University on Tuesday afternoon at Scots Park in a big MIAA doubleheader, with start time slated for 3:30 p.m.
