Alma College Softball sweeps Calvin in league-opening doubleheader, 4-3 and 9-0 in five innings

Alma Softball opened up MIAA play on a warm, windy Wednesday afternoon at Scots Field with a sweep of Calvin College. The Scots rallied from an early 3-0 deficit in the first game to come away with a 4-3 victory.  Alma scored the next 13 runs on the afternoon, as the home team captured the second game by a margin of 9-0 in five innings.

The opening game of the day saw Calvin jump out to a 3-0 advantage on three unearned runs, as the Scots showed some jitters of playing their home opener in the first league game of the year. Jr. Tara Leddy (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) fought through the struggles behind her early and pitched a game that gave the Scots the opportunity to fight back.

In the nightcap, it was all Scots. Alma jumped on Calvin early and often, scoring four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Sr. Houston Verbeck's (Burton, MI/Flint Kearsley) second homer of the year. The long-ball was key for Alma in the game, as the homers by Verbeck and Jr. Erika Brower (Allegan, MI/Allegan) knocked in five of the nine runs for the Scots.

Fr. Pitcher Louise Rezmer (Essexville, MI/B.C. All Saints) earned her first MIAA win of her career with a complete game shutout. The freshman gave up just two hits in the contest, striking out five and walking two, as she improved her season record to 4-2.

Alma improved to 15-5 on the year and 2-0 in the MIAA, while the Knights fell to 4-5 on the season and 0-2 in league play. The Scots travel to Hope College to take on the Flying Dutch on Saturday afternoon.
