The Alma softball team hit the road on Saturday, playing a doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan and came away with two victories. The Scots won the first contest 8-2, before taking the nightcap by a score of 5-2. It was supposed to be a four-game weekend, but snow and cold weather in Bluffton, Ohio, led to the cancellation of Friday's scheduled games.
Against Ohio Wesleyan, the Scots jumped out quickly in game one, scoring single runs in the first and third innings, sandwiching two tallies in the second, for a 4-0 advantage. Sarah Johnson knocked in Kelly Koenigsknecht with two outs in the first, while Koenigsknecht notched two RBI's with a single to left in the top of the second inning. Kasey Miller knocked in Emily Ross with a single in the fourth to give Alma the four-run advantage.
OWU notched a single run off of Alma P Tara Leddy in the bottom of the fourth, but Alma responded with a run in the top of the fifth, when Johnson homered to left for a 5-1 lead. The Scots took an 8-1 advantage with three runs in the top of the seventh and even though the hosts scored a run in the bottom half, Alma walked off with the 8-2 win.
In the second game, Alma defeated the host squad by a margin of 5-2, as P Brittany Grys went the distance in the circle for the Scots, and did not give up an earned run. At the plate, Kelsey Rightenburg went 3-3 with three RBI's, as the Scots improved to 12-5 on the season heading into MIAA play.
After a scoreless first inning, Alma took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Rightenburg doubled to left center, scoring Koenigsknecht, Erika Brower and Miller. Ohio Wesleyan closed the gap to 3-1 in the botton of the fourth inning, before Rebecca Dewyse doubled to left center to score Miller for a 4-1 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan scored an unearned run off of Grys in the bottom half of the frame, but Alma reached the final margin of 5-2 in the top half of seventh. The final run came on a dropped pop-up by OWU on a hit by Erika Brower, sending Miller to her third scored run of the game.
Grys finished the contest giving up four hits with the no earned runs, eight strikeouts and two walks. Rightenburg was the only Scot player to have multiple hits in the nightcap, but Alma scattered seven hits, and Wesleyan had four errors in the visitors' win.
