ALMA SOFTBALL FINISHES SEASON-OPENING DOUBLE-HEADER WITH 2 WINS AS THEY DEFEAT HEIDELBERG 5-4 IN SECOND GAME

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

In the second game of Alma Softball team's 2009 home opener, the Scots defeated Heidelberg University by a score of 5-4 at a chilly and windy Scots Park. The win improved the Scots' record to 8-5, while Heidelberg fell to 2-10 on the season.
After a 8-0 loss in the first game, Heidelberg had different ideas for the nightcap and played a very spirited game against Alma, but came up just short. After a scoreless first two innings, Heidelberg jumped on the Scots' starting pitcher, So. Brittany Grys (Portland, MI/Portland) as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a double, a single and a sacrifice flyout.

In the bottom of the same frame, Alma tied the score at 2-2 when Jr. Cassie Schwab (Midland, MI/Midland) singled and advanced to third on a single by So. CF Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler, MI/Fowler) after a Heidelberg error. Sr. 3B Brittany Fales (Midland, MI/Midland Dow) then doubled, knocking in Schwab and Koenigsknecht and tying the game at 2-2.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Alma scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead and seemingly a comfortable lead. The inning started with a Koenigsknecht single and after Fales singled her to third, she was pinch ran for by Fr. Camille Dittmar (Highland, MI/Milford). The next hitter, So. Erika Brower (Allegan, MI/Allegan) doubled to right center, scoring  both runners. So. Katie Gruber (Webberville, MI/Webberville) pinch ran for Brower and was knocked in by Jr. RF Sarah Johnson (Portland, MI/Portland) on the next at bat for a 5-2 Alma advantage.

Heidelberg was not going to quit however, as they came back to score two runs in the top of the sixth inning with three hits. So. P Tara Leddy ((Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) came in to relieve Grys during the Heidelberg rally and was able to get out of the inning with a one-run lead.

After Alma came up empty in the bottom of the sixth, Heidelberg threatened to tie the game and had runners at first and third with two outs in the final seventh inning frame. However, Leddy was able to get the game-winning out on a pop-up to first base and get the save for Grys' winning effort.

The Scots are scheduled to host Ohio Wesleyan University for a doubleheader at Scots Park on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
