Scots Advance to Nationals

Behind a nine-inning, complete-game shutout by pitcher Melissa Tavidian, New Hudson (Mi.), the Scots of Alma College emerged victorious over the Maroons of the University of Chicago. Tavidian gave up only two hits while striking out seven in a dominating performance on the mound.

The lone Scot run came in the bottom of the ninth as third baseman Laura Rochon, Royal Oak (Mi.), reached base with a lead off double, was bunted to third, and with the infield pulled in, scored on a flare hit over the shortstop's head by teammate Laura Bell, Walled Lake (Mi.). Bell went 2-4 for the Scots in the game, and catcher Erin Carson, Farmington Hills (Mi.), added two hits on four plate appearances.

Taking the loss for Chicago was pitcher Petra Wade, Batavia (Ill.), who relieved teammate Lauren Hula, East Lansing (Mi.), in the sixth inning. Chicago's two hits came off the bats of center fielder Kara Thaw, St. Louis (Mo.), and Annie Yaniga, Berea (Ohio), who each singled for the Maroons.

With the win, the Scots advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships next weekend in Virginia. Further information will be posted as soon as it's received.
