ALMA, Mich. – Alma Volleyball (6-8, 0-0 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) fell to No. 15 Calvin University (9-2, 0-0 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) in three competitive sets Friday evening at Art Smith Arena.
The pace of play remained fast throughout the match, with a combined 237 attacks. Calvin's Sarah Bradley led the match with 14 attacks, while senior Nevea Bush led Alma's offense with 12 kills.
Alma setters Grace Droste and Ruby Maynard recorded a combined 30 assists.
Alma's defense held strong throughout the match. The team recorded 51 digs and six blocks compared with Calvin's 45 digs and four blocks, respectively. Junior libero Grace Steiner led the back row with 15 digs.
In the first set, the teams battled point for point. Alma's offensive power kept the Scots level with their ranked opponent. With the score at 25-26, the Calvin Knights secured the first-set victory.
The second set featured a consistent rally from Calvin. The Knights' hitters recorded 17 kills.
In the third set, Alma showed its grit. Like the first set, the score remained close as the teams exchanged points. The Scots fought until the final serve, but the Knights ultimately secured the third set, 27-25.
The Scots will take on Olivet University and begin conference play at home on Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
