Adrian, MI – Alma College Softball was in action on Wednesday, taking on Adrian College in MIAA conference play. Alma narrowly dropped game one 2-1, before defeating the Bulldogs 12-4 in game two.
Adrian 2, Alma 1
Adrian scored the first runs of the game in the 1
st inning of game one. Both scoring runs came on one swing of the bat, as a double to left-center made it 2-0 Bulldogs. From that moment on, both pitchers locked in, and traffic on the base paths was extremely limited. The two hurlers only allowed eight total hits and seven total walks in the game. Despite Alma threatening on several occasions, the Scots couldn't score until the 7
th inning, when
Jordyn Porter plated
Sydni Wolverton on an RBI single to make it 2-1. However, the rally would be cut short moments later, as Adrian held on for the one-run win.
The offense for Alma was scarce in game one, with five different players managing to notch a hit in the loss, and four of those managing to reach base twice in the contest.
Morgan Westall (10-2) took an unfortunate loss, after pitching a complete six inning game in the circle. She struck out five, while allowing just five total baserunners in the game.
Alma 12, Adrian 4 (6 innings)
In game two, it was Adrian who scored first again, with the Bulldogs striking in the top of the 1
st on an RBI single. Alma responded in the 2
nd, when
Haylie Alsip singled to right-center to score
Natalia Rodriguez.
Peyton Fether, Porter, and
Julia Duncan all followed suit with singles up the middle, allowing four more runs to cross the plate. Alma led 5-1 after two innings.
Adrian slowly chipped into the Scots' lead, scoring a run in the 3
rd, and two more in the 4
th. With the advantage cut to one run, a 4
th inning Porter home run to center field doubled the Alma lead at 6-4. In the 5
th, the Scots blew the game wide open. An RBI double from Porter scored two more runs, and Duncan singled her home moments later to make it 9-4.
Camille Lozmack tacked on another run with a double of her own, making it 10-4 after five innings. The game came to an early end in the 6
th, when Porter put a ball on the ground to third base with the bases loaded, and a Bulldog error saw two more runs scamper home, 12-4 the final.
Porter led with a 4-4 outing, collecting five RBI and drawing a walk.
Mckenna Salley went 3-4, and four more Scots recorded multi-hit games.
Mikaylyn Kenney (6-2) got the start, pitching 5.0 innings in the win. She allowed seven hits and struck out three.
Bella Treloar pitched one inning in relief.
The Scots improve to 17-5, 3-1 in MIAA play, and host Albion on Saturday.
