Softball Earns Pair of One Run Wins Over Albion

Alma won 3-2 and 1-0 on Saturday

Alma, MI – Alma College Softball was in action on Saturday, taking on Albion College in MIAA conference play. The Scots squeaked out a pair of one-run victories, 3-2 and 1-0 the finals.

Alma 3, Albion 2
In game one, Albion scored the first run of the game in the 3rd inning on a Scots error, tacking on another run with RBI double in the 4th. Trailing 2-0, Alma answered in the bottom of the 4th inning, when Gen Cook made good on a bases-loaded pinch hitting opportunity to score Camille Lozmack. Moments later, Haylie Alsip connected on an RBI single of her own, scoring Julia Nowicki to tie the game. The Britons got out the jam with the game even, but the Scots knocked in the go-ahead run in the 5th inning, when Natalia Rodguez hit an RBI double to left center, scoring Lily Thompson. Alma's pitching shut things down the rest of the way, and the Scots claimed the win.

Julia Duncan and Rodriguez each scored two hits in the win, and Alma also got base knocks from Alsip, Lozmack, and Cook. Morgan Westall (11-2) pitched a complete game in the circle, striking out five and allowing six hits.

In game two, a pitcher's duel quickly emerged as the theme of the contest. Both hurlers managed to scatter 12 hits throughout the game, and when traffic did find the basepaths, it was hard to move around the bags. The lone run of the game came in the top of the 5th inning, when Peyton Fether hit one of many fly balls that went to center field throughout the game. It was just deep enough that Lily Thompson could score on the sac fly. From there, Mikaylyn Kenney held the Briton bats at bay, and Alma swept the twinbill with a 1-0 victory.

Fether collected two hits on the day, along with the game-winning RBI, and Holzinger had two hits as well. Kenney (7-2) pitched a complete game shutout. She struck out three while allowing five hits.

Alma moves to 19-5 with the wins, 5-1 in the MIAA, and looks forward to a doubleheader at Calvin on Friday.
