Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Softball was in action on Friday evening, taking on Calvin University in MIAA play. Alma split the day, winning a 10-inning thriller in game one, before narrowly falling in game two, 5-4.
Alma 2, Calvin 1 (10 Innings)
Game one was truly a tale of two games. Both teams found no chinks in the armor of the opposing pitchers, as the game flew through the first seven innings scoreless. Hits were scattered, and base traffic was nonexistent as both hurlers ran through batters relentlessly. With the game in extras, the Scots finally broke through when a
Kendal Holzinger base hit was aided by a Calvin error, placing a runner on third. A
Peyton Fether single on the very next at bat scored the go-ahead run, before Calvin escaped the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Calvin connected on an RBI single to tie the game. With both teams scoreless in the 9
th,
Sydni Wolverton hit an RBI single through the left side, scoring
Mckenna Salley. She would turn into the game-winning run as Calvin couldn't convert their scoring chance in the bottom of the inning.
Fether went 3-5 with an RBI. Duncan, Wolverton, and Holzinger also had hits in the win.
Jordyn Porter reached base frequently with four walks in the contest.
Morgan Westall (12-2) pitched a complete game in the win. She struck out four and allowed seven hits over 10 innings.
Calvin 5, Alma 4
In game two, Alma hit the scoreboard first, when Porter singled to left field, scoring
Katelyn Thomas in the 3
rd inning. Leading 1-0, Calvin would hang a four-spot on the Scots in the 4
th to put Alma a 4-1 deficit. Alma was held in check until the 6
th inning.
Camille Lozmack hit an RBI single, and with two outs,
Gen Cook delivered on a pinch hit opportunity, tying the game at 4-4 with a two-RBI base knock to center. However, it was Calvin who would score in the top of the 7
th, and hold Alma off the board to close things out.
Seven different Scots provided a base hit in the loss.
Mikaylyn Kenney (7-3) pitched 6.1 innings, striking out two and allowing eight hits. Westall pitched 0.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit.
Alma moves to 20-6, 6-2 in MIAA play. The Scots have one more nonconference doubleheader at Heidelberg on Monday.
