Clermont, FL – Alma College Softball rounded out their spring break trip to Florida on Saturday afternoon. The Scots split a pair of games, losing to Johnson & Wales, before defeating Wentworth Tech.
Johnson & Wales 6, Alma 3
The Scots fell behind early in game number one, with the opposition putting up four runs in the top of the 1
st inning. Alma would strike back in the bottom of the frame, when
Jordyn Porter singled home
Peyton Fether to get the Scots on the board. Things were quiet until the 5
th, when JWU would score on a sac fly to make it 5-1, with Alma hitting back immediately once again. This time it was a
Julia Duncan single that scored
Julia Nowicki. In the 7
th, JWU tacked on one more run, and an Alma rally was cut short after
Sophia Paryaski connected on a ball hard enough to score
Gen Cook. The final was 6-3.
Alma managed just three hits in the loss, with Porter, Duncan, and
Natalia Rodriguez collecting the knocks.
Mikaylyn Kenney (2-2) got the start, pitching 4.1 innings. She struck out one and allowed seven hits before being relieved by
Grace Main. The sophomore pitched 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits.
Alma 8, Wentworth Institute of Technology 2
In game two, it was once again the opponents getting the scoring started. Wentworth scored in the bottom of the 3
rd on an RBI single to take the lead. Alma answered in the 4
th, when Cook hit an RBI single to right-center, scoring
Lily Thompson. WIT retook the lead in the 4
th at 2-1, before the Scots offense starting to light up. The Scots picked up a pair of runs in the 5
th, when
Katelyn Thomas singled to right field to score
Haylie Alsip and
Sydni Wolverton. Now leading 3-2, the lead was doubled when Duncan scampered home on a double-steal. Leading 4-2 in the 6
th, Porter and Duncan each knocked in runs on a pair of RBI doubles to make it 7-2. Thomas hit a third RBI double for good measure, bringing the score to the final of 8-2.
Thomas was 4-4 with three RBI, leading the offense. Alma also got three hits out of Duncan, and two base knocks out of Alsip and Porter.
Bella Treloar got the start, pithing three innings. She struck out one, allowing four hits.
Morgan Westall (5-0) pitched four innings, picking up the win in relief. She struck out three, while allowing five hits.
The Scots return home 8-2, and look forward to their home opener on March 19 against Ohio Northern.
