Softball Splits on Final Day in Clermont

Alma returns home with an 8-2 record

Clermont, FL – Alma College Softball rounded out their spring break trip to Florida on Saturday afternoon. The Scots split a pair of games, losing to Johnson & Wales, before defeating Wentworth Tech.

Johnson & Wales 6, Alma 3
The Scots fell behind early in game number one, with the opposition putting up four runs in the top of the 1st inning. Alma would strike back in the bottom of the frame, when Jordyn Porter singled home Peyton Fether to get the Scots on the board. Things were quiet until the 5th, when JWU would score on a sac fly to make it 5-1, with Alma hitting back immediately once again. This time it was a Julia Duncan single that scored Julia Nowicki. In the 7th, JWU tacked on one more run, and an Alma rally was cut short after Sophia Paryaski connected on a ball hard enough to score Gen Cook. The final was 6-3.

Alma managed just three hits in the loss, with Porter, Duncan, and Natalia Rodriguez collecting the knocks. Mikaylyn Kenney (2-2) got the start, pitching 4.1 innings. She struck out one and allowed seven hits before being relieved by Grace Main. The sophomore pitched 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits.

Alma 8, Wentworth Institute of Technology 2
In game two, it was once again the opponents getting the scoring started. Wentworth scored in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single to take the lead. Alma answered in the 4th, when Cook hit an RBI single to right-center, scoring Lily Thompson. WIT retook the lead in the 4th at 2-1, before the Scots offense starting to light up. The Scots picked up a pair of runs in the 5th, when Katelyn Thomas singled to right field to score Haylie Alsip and Sydni Wolverton. Now leading 3-2, the lead was doubled when Duncan scampered home on a double-steal. Leading 4-2 in the 6th, Porter and Duncan each knocked in runs on a pair of RBI doubles to make it 7-2. Thomas hit a third RBI double for good measure, bringing the score to the final of 8-2.

Thomas was 4-4 with three RBI, leading the offense. Alma also got three hits out of Duncan, and two base knocks out of Alsip and Porter. Bella Treloar got the start, pithing three innings. She struck out one, allowing four hits. Morgan Westall (5-0) pitched four innings, picking up the win in relief. She struck out three, while allowing five hits.

The Scots return home 8-2, and look forward to their home opener on March 19 against Ohio Northern.
