Alma, MI – Alma College Softball hosted Muskingum University in their home opener on Sunday afternoon at Scots Park. Alma dropped game one 6-2, before falling 7-6 in game two.
Muskingum 6, Alma 2
Muskingum opened the scoring in the 2
nd inning of game one, with a Scots throwing error resulting in two runs coming across the plate. With the Muskies leading 2-0, Alma answered in the 4
th inning.
Julia Duncan connected on a sac fly, which allowed
Peyton Fether to score from third. With the Alma offense unable to secure a base hit off of the Muskies starter, the visitors piled on two more runs in the 5
th and tacked on another pair in the 7
th. With the score at 6-1 in Muskingum's favor, Alma scored
Kacee Gray off the bat of
Gen Cook, but couldn't advance the rally any further. The final score rested at 6-2 Muskies.
Alma was limited to just two hits in the game with Duncan and
Katelyn Thomas delivering the knocks. Thomas was the only Scot to reach base two times, also drawing a walk in the loss.
Morgan Westall (6-1) got the start in the circle. She pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits, and striking out three batters.
Grace Main pitched 2.2 innings in relief. She allowed two runs on four hits.
Muskingum 7, Alma 6
The Scots were the first on the scoreboard in game two, with
Christa Munn scoring Thomas on a groundout to second base in the 2
nd inning. Muskingum responded with runs in the 3
rd and 4
th innings to take a 2-1 lead. That advantage lasted half an inning, as the Scots offense went to work in the bottom of the 4
th.
Camille Lozmack tied the game on an RBI single to right center, and was then involved in a double steal that saw the Scots take the lead with Thomas safe at home. Now leading 3-2,
Mckenna Salley laid down a bunt to score Lozmack, and a
Peyton Fether single made it 5-2.
Jordyn Porter concluded the Alma scoring with an RBI single, and Alma led 6-2 after four. The Muskies plated one in the 5
th, and tacked on a four-spot in the 6
th that would prove decisive. The Scots were unable to recover, with the final score 7-6.
Fether went 2-3 with a walk and an RBI in the loss, and Alma got base hits from six others in the lineup.
Mikaylyn Kenney got the start in the circle. She pitched 5.2 innings, striking out two and conceding six runs.
Grace Main (0-1) pitched 0.1 innings in relief, allowing one hit and the go-ahead run.
Bella Treloar closed out the final inning with her only base runner coming on a Scots error.
Alma is back in action tomorrow, when the Scots host Ohio Northern.
