Albion, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was on the road on Wednesday night, taking on Albion College in MIAA play. The Scots were defeated by a final of 72-63.
Opening the game, the teams were neck-and-neck. Neither side could open up any sort of decisive lead, with the lead switching hands several times, but never growing greater than three points. That was until Alma found a way to get up by five points at the end of the first quarter, leading 18-13 after one. The Britons continued to battle with Alma, clawing their way back to a three-point game at the halfway mark of the second period. A late surge by the Scots wads enough to see the visitors into the halftime break with a 34-29 lead.
Coming out of halftime, the Scots continued to hold their lead, getting up by as much as nine points early. Albion was able to fight back into things, and as the game tightened up defensively, Alma maintained a slim margin. The road team led 42-38 at the halfway mark of the quarter, but it was the Britons who were able to string together a late 11-5 run to take the lead. A
Sarah Ebel layup kept the Albion lead to two points, with the Brits leading 51-49 after three. Alma answered with an 11-8 run to start the fourth quarter, giving the Scots the lead at 60-59. However, it was a 10-0 run from Albion that proved decisive, as the Britons held on for the nine-point win, 72-63 the final.
Kate Starkey led with 14 points and five assists, with the Scots also getting double digit scoring from
Cadence Kaminske (11 pts, two rebounds),
Reese Wisniewski (11 points, two rebounds),
Molly Deurloo (10 points, four rebounds, three assists) and
Breckyn Werner (10 points, five rebounds, three assists).
Sarah Ebel had a game high nine rebounds for Alma.
The Scots drop to 9-13 overall, 5-8 in MIAA play. The Scots are back in action at home on Sunday against Saint Mary's.
