Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball continued MIAA conference play on Saturday, hosting the Hornets of Kalamazoo College. The Scots were defeated by a final of 68-64.
The Hornets got out to an early lead, holding Alma without a made field goal for nearly three minutes to open the game. The visitors carried a 7-5 lead, pushing out to a 12-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Opening the second, Kzoo refused to miss. The visitors extended their gap in front to 15 at 23-8 before Alma was able to respond. The Scots put together a short 7-0 run to cut the gap back to single digits, before the Hornets found their legs again. The teams battled to a seven-point gap, with Alma trailing 31-24 at halftime.
It was the Scots offense that opened the second half with some heat. The home side closed the gap to five points at 36-31. However, Alma was unable to get inside the five-point margin. Kalamazoo drove the lead back up to 10, but a late push by the hosts saw the lead trimmed back to five at the end of the third, 48-43. The Scots narrowed things to a one possession game with 7:25 to play in regulation, trailing 50-47. After trading baskets, Alma got to within two at 55-53 at the halfway mark of the fourth quarter. Kzoo would open back up a 10 point lead, but a pair of
Cadence Kaminske threes gave Alma life, with the Scots down 67-64 with 13 seconds left. In the end, a made free throw sealed the game, and the Hornets walked out 68-64 winners.
Alma got 35 of their 64 points off the bench, compared to just five for Kalamazoo. The Scots were led by Kaminske with 19 points.
Molly Deurloo had 12 points and six rebounds, along with a block and two steals.
Breckyn Werner also collected 12 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Alma drops to 8-9 overall, and 4-4 in the MIAA. The Scots are back in action on January 28 at Adrian College.
