Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was at home to continue MIAA conference play on Wednesday night, hosting rival Albion. The Scots were defeated 81-61 on the night.
Alma opened the night on a strong run, jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first four minutes. Albion responded strongly, posting a 16-2 run during the remainder of the quarter. The Scots trailed 18-9 after one. Opening the second quarter, the theme of the night showed itself out, as the Britons just refused to miss shots from the floor. After pushing out to an 11-point lead of 25-14 at the 5:20 mark, Albion lit it up from all over the floor. The visitors connected on a 15-7 run, and closed the half out with a 19-point advantage at halftime.
An early Briton run saw Albion get up by 23 at 48-25. Despite Alma's best efforts, including a late run, the Scots couldn't answer the Briton's red-hot offense. Alma trailed 66-41 after three. Albion led by as much as 27 in the fourth, before Alma cut the deficit to 20 ahead of the final buzzer, 81-61 the final score.
The visitors shot 51% from the floor in the game, including 66% in the third quarter from the floor, and made 44% from three. The Britons led second chance scoring 7-3, and had 20 bench points to Alma's ten. The road team also outscored the Scots in the paint, 36-24.
Alma shot 40% from the floor, with a 36% mark from the floor. The Scots were 72% at the free throw line, and got 21 points off Albion turnovers, which fueled their late push.
Kate Starkey led scoring efforts with 17 points, along with three blocks and a pair of steals. Molley Deurloo connected on four three-pointers to score 12 points.
Cadence Kaminske scored 11 and
Breckyn Werner scored eight.
Alma drops to 8-8, and 4-3 in MIAA play. The Scots are back in action on Saturday, hosting Kalamazoo.
