Notre Dame, IN – Alma College Women's Basketball continued MIAA play on Wednesday night, traveling to Saint Mary's College. The Scots were victorious by a final of 73-63.
SMC got on the board first, racing out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter. As the Scots offense came to life, the visitors were able to close on an 8-4 run, closing the Belles lead to seven points at the end of the first quarter, 17-10. Alma's momentum continued in the second quarter, with the Scots opening on an 11-4 run. The game was knotted at 21-21 at the halfway point of the period, but the Belles mounted a strong push. The Scots matched it, and
Reese Wisniewski hit a go-ahead three to give the visitors their first lead of the game going into halftime, 30-29.
The Scots opened the second half with a 13-5 run, gaining some separation at 43-34. However, the Belles wouldn't let Alma gain much breathing room, narrowing the Scots lead down to five at 49-44. Alma closed the quarter by pushing back out to a 56-48 lead. The teams battled neck and neck in the start of the fourth quarter. Alma tried to pull away, but never was able to get out to a double-digit lead. After SMC got the Scots lead down to 67-62, Alma clamped down defensively, and converted six times from the free throw line to ride to a 10-point win, 73-63 the final.
Kate Starkey led the way with 25 points and four assists.
Cadence Kaminske scored 18, and
Breckyn Werner contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.
Sarah Ebel led all rebounders in the game with eight boards.
The Scots improve to 8-7, and 4-2 in MIAA play. Alma is back in action on January 21, when the Scots host Albion.
