Football Outgunned by #19 UW-River Falls

River Falls, WI – Alma College Football opened the 2025 season on Saturday afternoon, taking on #19 Wisconsin-River Falls. In a high scoring affair, the Scots were outgunned, losing 45-33.

River Falls took the first possession of the game, going 71 yards on seven plays to take a 7-0 lead early on. After a pair of three-and-outs, the Scots fumbled the ball. River Falls recovered and started driving, only for Mar'Sean Massenburg to come up with an interception that cut the drive short. From there the Scots moved the ball quickly, going 80 yards to score their first touchdown of the season on an Eddie Williams 23-yard TD run. A missed extra point put the score at 7-6, where it would sit at the end of the first quarter. UWRF went on to score 17 unanswered points in the second quarter, and held Alma off the board. The Scots trailed 24-6 at halftime.

Out of the half, Alma turned the ball over on downs, and UWRF scored a touchdown to capitalize. With the Scots trailing 31-6, the Alma offense started to click. The visitors marched 79 yards down the field on 18 plays with a Colin Coffey touchdown from three yards out pulling Alma within 17. The Falcons answered with a big play passing score, only for the Scots offense to put together another 78-yard drive, with an 11-yard Williams TD capping it off. UWRF responded with a nine play, 77-yard drive to go up 45-20 with 13 minutes to play. Still firing, the Scots scored on a Zach Poff 53-yard touchdown reception, and recovered a blocked punt, but fell short, with the final score at 45-33.

Carter St. John was 22-42 passing the ball, with 242 yards to go with two touchdowns and an interception. Eddie Williams led all rushers in the game with 142 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Zach Poff led Scots receivers with 95 yards on six catches and one touchdown. Jett King collected a team high 11 tackles in the loss, and Jack Anderson picked up two TFLs to lead the Alma defense.

The Scots return to Alma next week to take on Denison in their 2025 home opener.
