Alma, MI – Alma College Football hosted Denison University in their home opener on Saturday afternoon. The Scots were victorious by a final of 53-27.
The Scots scored on the opening possession of the game, with
Carter St. John connecting on an 18-yard TD pass to
Zach Poff, capping off an eight-play, 61-yard scoring drive. Denison answered immediately with a touchdown of their own, but Alma blocked the PAT, with
Mar'Sean Massenburg taking the block back for two points, putting Alma up 9-6. After the ensuing kickoff,
Eddie Williams needed just one play, racing 80 yards to the house to put the Scots up 16-6. Alma held that 10-point lead after one quarter.
Will Soulliere connected on a 32-yard field goal to open the second quarter scoring, before the Big Red rattled off 14-points unanswered to take the lead at 20-19. After falling behind, the Scots put together a 10-play, 70-yard drive, ending with Poff throwing a touchdown to St. John to put Alma back on top. In the late stages, St. John connected with
Sam Couch on a 59-yard scoring strike with one minute left in the half. The scoring play boosted the Scots to a 32-20 halftime lead.
The first play of the third quarter was a scoring play, as
Brock Beaudrie intercepted a thrown away pass, returning it 30 yards to the house for a touchdown. After a three-an-out from the Big Red the Scots went 65 yards in three plays, with Poff collecting his 2
nd touchdown of the day from St. John, this one from six yards out. Alma led 46-20 after three quarters.
Brian Morgan finished off the Alma scoring with a two-yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter, and a Denison TD would end the scoring, with Alma walking out 53-27 winners.
Carter St. John completed 15 of 23 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns.
Eddie Williams was the leading rusher on the day with 150 yards and a touchdown.
Zach Poff caught six passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns.
Jett King led the way defensively with eight tackles.
Alma moves to 1-1 on the year, and will host Hanover College next week.
