Football Walks Off #15 Hope in Overtime

Holland, MI – Alma College Football traveled to #15 Hope College on Saturday to take on the Flying Dutchmen. The Scots won an overtime thriller by a final of 29-26.

Things got off to a hot start for the Scots, who scored on their first drive of the game. With an Eddie Williams one-yard touchdown run capping off an 11-play, 75-yard drive. After a Hope fumble on the ensuing drive, the Scots struck again, with Carter St. John connecting on a 70-yard pass to Zach Poff, doubling the Alma lead to 14-0. The Scots led by the same margin at the end of the quarter.

The Alma offense slowed in the second quarter, and Hope was able to take advantage of several Alma turnovers to catapult themselves in front with two touchdown drives and a made field goal. The Flying Dutchmen led 16-14 at halftime.

Out of the half, the defenses locked in, with yards getting hard to come by. Williams pulled out a 48-yard touchdown run to put Alma back on-top, 20-16, with 8:26 to play in the third. After Jace Heck put the Scots up 23-16 with a 25 yard field goal, Hope was able to tie the game with just 20 seconds to go in regulation. The teams headed to overtime tied at 23.

The Flying Dutchmen got the ball first, and were forced to take a field goal by the Alma defense. The Scots offensive possession was tumultuous, with the seven-play drive ending with the entire game riding on fourth-and-goal from the two-yard line. St. John connected on the walk-off touchdown with Miles Haggart, and the Scots ran out 29-26 winners in overtime.

St. John threw for 173 and a pair of touchdowns in the win. Williams led all rushers with 100 yards on the day, and Poff led all receivers with a game high 70 yards. Mar'Sean Massenberg and Jack Anderson led Scots tacklers with seven tackles apiece.

Alma moves to 2-2 on the season with the upset win, and are off to a 1-0 start in MIAA play. The Scots host Calvin University on homecoming weekend next Saturday.
