Alma, MI – Alma College Football hosted Calvin University to conclude Scots athletics homecoming festivities on Saturday. In a game between two teams that were receiving national votes, the Scots handed the Knights their first loss of the season, 55-6 the final score.
The Scots got the ball first, and drove straight down the field, capping a seven-play, 83-yard drive with a 44-yard
Eddie Williams receiving touchdown. Leading 7-0, the Scots got the ball back, and put up another 66-yard scoring drive, ending with a
Miles Haggart 20-yard TD reception from St. John. Alma would tack on a 28-yard
Jace Heck field goal, and led 17-0 after one quarter.
In the second, the offense turned up the heat, with Alma capping a five-play, 58-yard drive with a trick play 24-yard touchdown pass from
Zach Poff to Haggart. Just four minutes later, it was Poff in the endzone for the first of his three receiving TDs on the day. The senior wideout scored from 34 yards out to put Alma up 31-0. Things then quieted until the 2:04 mark, when the Ithaca native caught his second TD pass of the day, this time 21 yards, to end the first half scoring at 38-0 in favor of Alma.
Out of the half, the Scots kept the pedal to the floor, with Poff finding himself wide open on the receiving end of a 56-yard scoring pass to make it 45-0 with 10 minutes to play in the third quarter.
Chase Vogt connected five minutes later on his first career field goal, from 30 yards out, to grow the lead to 48-0. Alma's scoring ended when
Tyler Herzog's threw his first career touchdown pass, hooking up with
TJ Seiler on a 79-yard scoring strike to put the Scots lead at 55-0. Calvin s cored with 14 seconds left, only for
Kalib Jackson to get a hand on the PAT.
The final score rested at 55-6, Alma.
Carter St. John led all passers with 320 yards and five touchdowns on 16 of 21 passing.
Eddie Williams led the game in rushing with 75 yards on 13 carries.
Zach Poff recorded 154 receiving yards and three touchdowns on five catches.
Emillio Riley and
Zayne Moore led tacklers with six total tackles on the day.
Calvin was led by Thomas Vaccaro with 168 passing yards on 22 of 33 passing. Leighton Kolk had 33 yards on four carries to lead Knights rushers.
The Scots enter the bye at 3-2, and are off to a 2-0 start in MIAA play.
Alma is next in action on October 18 at 1:00 PM, when they travel to Albion College.
The Britons are 2-3, and 0-2 in the MIAA after losing 28-7 to Adrian Saturday.
