ALMA — Phil Miller, a college athletics administrator with experience in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, has been named Alma College's Director of Athletics following a national search. Miller currently serves as associate director of athletics for operations and facilities at Franklin and Marshall College (Penn.). Miller will join the Scots on October 15th.
Miller will be responsible for the overall development and general management of Alma's NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics program, effective immediately, announced Joe Odenwald, Alma College president.
"The depth and breadth of Phil's experience, together with his numerous accomplishments in the field and educational foundation, made him stand out among a pool of highly qualified candidates," Odenwald said. "His experience as a fundraiser, facilitator, mentor and developer of student-athletes is exemplary. I look forward to working with Phil and welcome him to Alma."
Miller has served in his current role at Franklin and Marshall — where he provides support for overall department leadership, facilities, event management and operations, capital projects, risk management, recreation, sports performance, and diversity and inclusion initiatives — since 2023. In that time, he has overseen the renovation of athletic facilities on campus, helped lead the implementation of department management tools, supervised coaches and staff, which included budget management, accomplishing program fundraising initiatives and goals in supporting the experience of student-athletes.
"I am honored and blessed to take over the role of director of athletics at Alma College," Miller said. "I'm deeply grateful to President Odenwald, the search committee, and the entire Alma community for their trust in me. Together, we will continue to strengthen a culture of excellence within Scots athletics. My career has given me the chance to learn from outstanding leaders in the field, and I intend to draw on that knowledge and network to further advance Alma College Athletics."
Miller views Alma as a destination of choice for student-athletes and staff, where athletics works hand-in-hand with every part of campus to provide a co-curricular education that helps students grow as leaders and citizens.
"As the next director of athletics, I'm excited to bring my enthusiasm and energy to our students, Our mission will guide us as we ensure that every Scot has an experience that prepares them to think critically, serve others generously, and lead with purpose," he added.
Miller previously served as athletic director at Rosemont College (Penn.), where he led 13 varsity sports and provided oversight to an athletic department that supported over 200 student-athletes. A leader across Rosemont's campus, Miller was responsible for NCAA compliance, athletic facility management, budget management, and scheduling, while also worked directly to enhance the student-athlete experience by serving as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) advisor. Additionally, he worked on the college's Academic Provost Council and Strategic Planning Committee and helped secure a $1.5-million state grant for facilities.
A 2010 graduate of Edinboro University, Miller earned his bachelor degree in physical education. Miller holds master's degrees from both Indiana University of Pennsylvania (sport management) and Slippery Rock (criminology). He most recently earned his doctorate from East Stroudsburg, studying educational leadership and administration.
Alma College offers 30 varsity sports, 15 men's and 15 women's, and roughly 70 percent of students take part in athletics. The Scots compete in the MIAA, America's first conference.
