Volleyball Splits Day Two at Earlham

Earlham, IN – Alma College Volleyball continued non-conference play at Earlham College on Saturday. The Scots were defeated by Earlham College 3-0, before defeating Kenyon 3-1.

Earlham 3, Alma 0 
The Scots were faced with a red-hot Earlham offense in their first game. EC hit a blistering .314 in the game. Alma initially led 6-1 in the opening set, before Earlham used a similar scoring run to take the lead at 8-7. The Scots were in the set the entire way, leading 20-17 in the late stages, before EC took a big push and claimed the set 25-20. In the second set, the weekend hosts jumped out to a 5-1 lead, extending their advantage to 10-4, and then to 18-5, before taking the set 25-10. The third set was another battle, but Earlham took the win. 25-21.

Emily Carling led the way with seven kills. Maggie McKale registered five, and Natalie Dutton four. Carling also picked up two aces. Olivia Deeb had 13 assists, and Rudy Maynard had eight. On the defensive end, Grace Steiner led with 11 digs, with Maynard adding seven.
 
Alma 3, Kenyon 1
In game two, Kenyon took an early lead, although the Scots didn't let the opposition go far. KC would take the set 25-20, but never reached the five-point margin until the end of the set. The Scots offense came out swinging in the second set, hitting over .360 with 13 kills. Alma led 4-0, and then 11-6. The Scots led comfortably throughout the set, leading by 10 points late before putting the set away at 25-15. Set three featured an uninterrupted nine point run by Alma that swung the set in the Scots' favor, increasing a 12-9 lead to 21-9. In the fourth, Kenyon took a series of small leads, with Alma reeling the opposition back in repeatedly. The Scots took their first lead of the set at 21-20, and retook the lead at 24-23 en route to a 26-24 set win.

Madison Munley had 10 kills in the win, and Dutton and Carling had eight apiece. Vicky Villarosa collected four aces, along with Carling's three. Maynard led the way with 17 assists, and Villarosa had 15. Rachel McGlothin and Steiner both had 17 digs to lead the defensive efforts.

Alma is back in action next weekend with a pair of neutral games on the cards.
