Volleyball Perfect in Ohio on Opening Weekend

Sandusky, OH – Alma College Volleyball continued action in Ohio on Saturday, notching a pair of four-set victories to remain unbeaten on the young season.
 
Alma 3, Wooster 1
In game one, it was Wooster who took ab early lead at 6-3, with Alma fighting back to a 7-7 tie. However, a 7-3 run by Wooster gave the opposition a lead that they would stretch to seven at 19-12. Despite a late push by Alma, the Scots dropped the set 25-22.

In the second set, Alma jumped out to leads of 5-3 and 10-7. The teams traded points before Alma connected on a handful of attacks in a row, gaining momentum to the tune of an 18-12 lead. It turned out to be too much for Wooster, and Alma claimed the set 25-20. In the third set, Alma snagged an early 10-4 lead, and a big push saw the Scots explode out to a 17-8 advantage. Wooster made a few late pushes to get the Alma lead back under control, but it was too late, with the Scots taking the set 25-19. The fourth and final set was much of the same, with Alma coming out 10-3 ahead, and leading by scores of 15-5, 18-7, and 23-8. Alma took the set 25-10, and the game three sets to one.

Madison Munley recorded 11 kills to lead the team, with Emily Carling adding eight, and Maggie McKale seven. In terms of assists, Olivia Deeb led with 21, and Vicky Villarosa collected 14. Grace Steiner and Rachel McGlothin each tallied four aces, and Carling had three.

Defensively, Steiner led with 16 digs, McGlothin had 11, and Carling had 10.
 
Alma 3, Worcester State 1
In their final game of the weekend, the Scots took an early lead at 6-2 in the opening set, increasing their lead to 10-3. WSU fought back, cutting the lead to 12-11, but a short run by the Scots put Alma up 17-12. The Lancers fought back hard, closing the gap back down to two at 23-21, but the Scots finished the set out, winning 25-22.

In set two, Alma got out to an identical 6-2 advantage, using a handful of short three and four point runs to open up a 10-point lead at 19-9. The Scots cruised to the set win at 25-12. Set three saw a 4-0 lead early for Alma, with the Scots leading 11-6 in the middle of the frame. Alma got up to a 22-14 lead, but WSU mounted an 11-2 run to take the lead. The Lancers outlasted Alma 27-25 in the end to extend the game.

The Lancers opened set four with a 3-1 lead over Alma, which was short lived as the Scots fought back to a 9-6 lead of their own. The teams traded runs, with neither side allowing the other to pull away by more than two. As the set wore on, it was Alma who was able to land the final blow, working out a 24-22 lead, which they would convert to a game-ending 25-23 set win.

Natalie Dutton led the way with 16 kills, McKale recorded 15, and McGlothin had 10. Villarosa led with 26 assists, and Deeb had 22. Carling and Villarosa each had three aces apiece. Steiner led with 19 digs, and Carling had 18.

Alma off to a 4-0 start, and is back in Ohio next weekend.
