Wilmington, OH – Alma College Volleyball was on the road on Friday for a matchup with Wilmington College. In their second five-set game of the season, Alma was victorious by a final of 3-2.
The opening set laid out the blueprint for what most of the contest would look like. Neither team took more than a four point lead in the opening frame, and both teams wound up tied at 24 apiece. Wilmington took a 25-24 lead for set point, only for Alma to grab two straight and flip the script at 26-25. Two points for the Quakers put the hosts back up, 27-26, before Alma tied things up at 27 all. WC pushed the set to the edge at 28, and 29, but Alma stormed back to lead 30-29. As Wilmington tied it up at 30-30, Alma took advantage of a Quaker service error, and used a
Vicky Villarosa ace to seal the marathon opening set, 32-30.
Wilmington won the second set, a set full of four and five point runs that eventually swung the home side's direction. WC took the set 25-22, and battled back from a 16-11 Alma lead in set three, winning 25-22 again to take a two sets to one lead in the contest.
In the fourth set, it was an early five point run that proved decisive in favor of Alma. Tied 4-4, the Scots pumped in five straight points to open up all the breathing room they would need. Despite several pushes from the Quakers, Alma maintained the five point lead, even increasing the gap to as much as seven at 19-12. The Scots held on to win 25-19, pushing the game to a winner-take-all set five.
Alma sprung out to a 3-1 lead, holding the gap steady with leads of 5-3, and 6-5. A Wilmington burst did see the hosts lead 7-6, but it was the closest they would come to the win for the remainder of the evening. Alma took the lead right back with a three-point run, and packed in a 5-1 push to end the contest with a 15-9 set win.
Madison Munley's career high 17 kills led the Scots offense.
Emily Carling added 11, and
Allie Fish recorded 10. Carling also landed four aces, with Addysin Calcamuggio netting a pair as well.
Olivia Deeb led with 26 assists, and Villarosa collected 24.
