Softball Earns First Road Sweep of Calvin Since 2015

Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Softball traveled to Calvin University on Wendesday evening to continue MIAA conference play. The Scots won both contests, 2-0 and 3-2, to earn their first road sweep of the Knights in 10 years.

Alma 2, Calvin 0
The only scoring of the game came in the 2nd inning, when Camille Lozmack started things with a single up the middle. She was caught stealing, before Sophia Somerset smacked a double down the left field line. Jenna Holzinger walked on the next at-bat, a Calvin error allowed Somerset to scamper home. Leading 1-0, Reneigh Sandmann singled through the left side to score Holzinger, doubling the Alma lead.

From there, Morgan Westall scattered five hits, guiding Alma to the win. Westall pitched all 7.0 innings in the victory, striking out seven.

Alma 3, Calvin 2
In game two it was Calvin who struck first. The Knights used an RBI single and a Scots error to take. 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Alma responded in the bottom of the 3rd. Kendal Holzinger singled through the left side. A sac bunt and a groundout moved her over to third base, and a Peyton Fether single scored Holzinger, as well as Reneigh Sandmann who had reached on a wild pitch, tying the game at 2-2.

Things remained level until the bottom of the 6th, when Jordyn Porter doubled down the left field line. A two-out single from Morgan Brandau scored the go-ahead run in the form of pinch runner Sydni Wolverton. With one out and the game tying run at first, the Scots turned a game-ending double play to secure the sweep.

The Scots got a multi-hit game out of Porter, who led the offense.

Mikaylyn Kenney pitched all 7.0 innings in the win, striking out two.

The Scots look forward to hosting The University of Olivet on Saturday.
