Notre Dame, IN – Alma College Softball was on the road Sunday, taking on Saint Mary's College to open MIAA conference play. The Scots were victorious by finals of 14-1 and 8-3.
Alma 14, Saint Mary's 1 (5 Innings)
The Scots used a steady run of scoring in game one to run away with a blowout win.
Reneigh Sandmann opened the scoring in the 1
st, hammering an RBI triple to left field to score
Jordyn Porter.
Peyton Fether followed up with a hard hit ball to short that scored Sandmann to make it 2-0. After a Belles error allowed
Julia Duncan aboard,
Camille Lozmack hit an RBI single to score the runner and move the lead to three. In the 2
nd, the Scots continued to find offense. Porter hit an RBI double to score
Jaycie LaValley, and Sandmann scored porter soon after. Leading 5-0,
Morgan Brandau blew the game wide open with a two-run homer to make it 7-0 Alma.
Saint Mary's scored their lone run of the game in the 2
nd, but Porter answered back in the 3
rd with a single to second base that scored two runs. The lead stretched further in the 4
th. Lozmack singled home a run, before a passed ball allowed another run to come home. With the lead at 11-1,
Sophia Somerset tripled to right field to score Lozmack. The scoring finished with McKenna Salley and
Kylie Halverson hitting RBI singles, with the latter coming in the 5
th inning. The final ended up at 14-1.
Porter led the way with a 4-4 game and three RBI. Sandmann, Lozmack, and Brandau also collected multiple RBI in the win.
Morgan Westall (4-6) pitched all 5.0 innings in the win, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
Alma 8, Saint Mary's 3
Game two opened with a bang, as a Brandau home run, her second of the day, put Alma on the board with a 2-0 lead in the 1
st. The Scots doubled their lead in the 3
rd inning. Lozmack hit a single to right field to score Fether, and a Belles error allowed Thompson to scamper home, bringing the score to 4-0.
Saint Mary's answered in the 4
th inning, but the Scots had a response by once again doubling their run total. Another error started the scoring as
Kylie Halverson made it home, and a Fether RBI single allowed Porter to get home. Leading 6-1, a Duncan sac fly, and a
Jenna Holzinger bases loaded walk capped the Alma scoring at 8-1. The Belles would try to rally in the bottom of the 7
th, but any comeback was cut short, with the final score at 8-3.
Porter, Fether, and Lozmack each totaled multiple hits in the victory.
Mikaylyn Kenney (6-3) pitched all 7.0 innings in the W. She allowed six hits and struck out six.
The Scots are on the road next, with a trip to Albion on the books.
