Tennis Felled in Trio of MIAA Contests

Alma, MI – Alma College Tennis opened MIAA play last week, with matches against Calvin, Kalamazoo, and Saint Mary's. The Scots men were felled by finals of 7-0 in both matches. Alma's women were defeated 7-0 by Calvin and Saint Mary's, falling 6-1 to Kalamazoo.

MEN
Calvin 7, Alma 0
In doubles competition, Alma was swept by the Knights. The Scots nearly took #1 doubles, but missed out. The duo of Jake Lasceski and Ashton Trnka took things to a tiebreaker at 6-6, but lost the final game 7-5. At #2, Eli Festerling and Tatenda Mukudu lost 6-1. Daniel Hickey and John Laxton lost 6-0 at #3.

In singles play, Lasceski was taken down 6-0, 6-0. Festerling was defeated 6-1, 6-1 at #2. Trnka pushed his #3 singles opponent to an extra game in set one, falling 7-5, 6-0. A 6-0, 6-0 final score saw Mukudu go down in defeat at #4. Laxton lost by an identical score at #5, and Hickey was defeated 6-3, 6-2 at #6 to round things out.

Kalamazoo 7, Alma 0
In doubles play, the duo of Lasceski and Trnka fell 6-2 at #1 doubles. Tatenda Mukudu and August Sack were bested 6-0 at #2, and John Laxton and Eli Festerling lost 6-1.

In singles play, Lasceski lost 6-0, 6-1 at #1. At #2, Sack fell 6-1, 6-0, and Festerling was felled 6-1, 6-1 at #3. The #4 matchup saw Trnka fall by a final of 6-0, 6-0. Mukudu lost 6-1, 6-0, and Laxton was dropped 6-1, 6-1 to round things out at #6.
 
WOMEN
Calvin 7, Alma 0
In doubles play, Kayla Weller and Leah Wronikowski lost 6-3 at #1. The #2 pairing of Karly Kushner and Jada Zerlaut lost 6-0, and the duo of Holly Hall and Sophia Hauffe dropped a 6-2 decision at #3.

In singles competition, Kushner lost 6-1, 6-2 at #1. Wronikowski was defeated 6-2, 6-1 at #2. Weller fell 6-1, 6-2 at #3, and #4 saw Zerlaut go down in a 6-3, 6-0 defeat. Finals of 6-0, 6-1 saw Hauffe dropped at #5, and Hall was defeated 6-2, 6-1 at #6.

Kalamazoo 6, Alma 1
Opening doubles play on Saturday, the #1 team of Weller and Wronikowski were defeated 6-1. Kushner and Zerlaut lost similarly, 6-1 at #2. At #3, Hall and Hauffe were felled 6-2.

Moving to singles play, Kushner lost at #1 by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Wronikowski lost in straight sets at #2. 

The #3 match saw the lone victory of the day for the Scots. Weller rallied from deficits of 0-5 and 1-3 to defeat her opponent 7-5, 6-3.

At #4, Zerlaut was defeated in straight sets, and Hauffe lost 6-3, 6-3 at #5. Rounding things out, Hall was dropped 6-1, 6-2 at #6 singles.
 
Saint Mary's 7, Alma 0
In the final match of the weekend, doubles play opened with all three of the Alma pairings falling by finals of 6-1.

At #1 singles, Kushner narrowly missed out on the win, falling by scores of 7-6 and 7-5. Wronikowski fell in a competitive #2 matchup, 6-4, 6-3. At #3, Weller lost 6-1, 6-3, and Zerlaut dropped the #4 contest 6-1, 6-1.

Hauffe went down 6-3, 6-3 at #5, and Hall was defeated 6-2, 6-1 at #6.
 
This week the Scots women have home matchups with Adrian and Albion, before a trip to Trine on Saturday. Alma's men look forward to facing off with Adrian and a road contest at Trine.
