Softball Tripped Up by Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, MI – Alma College Softball was on the road Saturday to take on Kalamazoo College in MIAA conference play. Alma was swept by the Hornets, with final scores of 6-0 and 6-2.

In game one, Kalamazoo scored a pair of runs in the opening inning, taking advantage of a Scots error. The Hornets scored on a double, and a dropped fly ball, taking a 2-0 lead. The hosts did more damage in the 3rd, hitting an RBI single and a two-run homer to open up a five-run gap. Kalamazoo tacked on one more insurance run in the 5th inning, and shut things down leading to a 6-0 final score.

Alma scattered five hits in the loss, getting base knocks from Peyton Fether, Camille Lozmack, Sophia Somerset, Jenna Holzinger, and Kylie Halverson

Morgan Westall pitched 4.2 innings, striking out seven. Bella Treloar came on in relief, pitching 1.1 innings.

The Hornets opened the scoring in game two as well, connecting on an RBI single in the 1st inning. Alma answered when Jordyn Porter was able to get aboard, and Morgan Brandau singled down the right field line to score her, tying the game at 1-1.

Kalamazoo took the lead in the 3rd inning, when another RBI single down the line allowed the go-ahead run to score. Leading 2-1, Kzoo hit a sac fly to left field to score an insurance run, increasing the lead to two. A 4thinning single and double piled on another three runs, and saw the home nine leading 6-1 after four innings. Alma tried to start a rally, with Jenna Holzinger doubling home Camille Lozmack to cut the deficit to four. However, the Hornets shut the rally down, taking the win 6-2.

Jordyn Porter posted a 2-3 outing, leading a Scots offense that collected nine hits in the loss.

Mikaylyn Kenney pitched 3.2 innings in the loss, striking out four. Bella Treloar came on in relief, pitching 2.1 innings, and Grace Main pitched the final frame in relief of Treloar.

Alma looks forward to a midweek pair of games at Calvin University.
