Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Lacrosse welcomed Siena Heights to Bahlke Field on Saturday to continue non-conference action. Alma was the victim of a late game comeback by the Saints, falling 13-12 in overtime.
The Saints hit the scoreboard first, scoring in the first 30 seconds of the game to go up 1-0. Alma answered with markers from
Kirsten Browne and
Sarah Bollinger to take a 2-1 lead. However, a woman-down goal with under a minute to play, and a buzzer beating goal allowed SHU to head into the break up 3-2.
Opening the quarter, Browne scored a pair of goals to give Alma a 4-3 lead, and after a Saints goal, the Scots ripped off three straight goals to lead 7-4 at halftime.
Bollinger scored out of halftime to put Alma up four goals, but SHU scored three in a row to force an Alma timeout, with the Scots protecting a one-goal lead. Out of the timeout, MaKayla Kozal forced a turnover from the Saints goalie, and managed to put it in the net to pad the Alma lead. After three quarters, the Scots led 9-7.
To start the fourth quarter, goals from Bollinger and Browne put Alma up 11-7 with nine minutes to play. However, Siena Heights got hot, and climbed all the way back to 11-11. Browne scored to give Alma the lead back 12-11, but SHU tied it, sending the game to overtime.
The Scots had the first look at offense in the extra period, but after a free position shot was ruled to have not fully crossed the goal-line, the Saints converted, claiming the win 13-12.
Browne scored five goals in the loss, and Bollinger four. Bollinger led with a game-high five ground balls.
Alexis Norko (3-2) made five saves in the loss.
Alma heads into a break from games, and is back at it on March 22 at Hanover.
