Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Lacrosse welcomed in Madonna University on Wednesday night for their 2025 home opener. The Scots were victorious, defeating the Crusaders 17-10.
Madonna scored the opening goal of the game just over a minute and a half in to the first quarter. The Scots answered with a pair of unassisted markers from MaKayla Kozal to take the lead with just over half the period remaining. Momentum then shifted back to the Crusader side, with the visitors scoring two goals in 17 seconds to take a 3-2 lead. However, it was Alma who would throw the last punch of the quarter, with
Kirsten Browne scoring two goals, and
Sarah Bollinger adding one to give Alma a 5-4 lead after one.
Out of the quarter break, Alma took the first multi-goal lead of the game with another Kozal goal. After Madonna hit back, the Scots pumped in a three goal run. Browne struck twice, and
Joanna Scorziello scored her first of the 2025 season to put Alma up four at 9-5. The Crusaders scored once more, but the Scots got a pair of goals to clap back from Browne and
Briar-Rose Mackey, and led 11-6 at halftime.
Opening the third quarter,
Rileigh McGeorge found the back of the net twice to grow the Alma lead to 13-6. However, Madonna wasn't going away, scoring three straight to get back within four. Mackey ended the run with a late goal, and the Scots found themselves up 14-9 after three. After the Crusaders scored to open the final quarter, Alma used goals from Browne, Mackey, and
Kylie Lewis to ice the game, and run out 17-10 winners.
Browne led all goal scorers in the game with six goals. Mackey registered three goals and three assists. Kozal also collected three goals in the win. Scorziello recorded a game-high 5 ground balls.
Alexis Norko (3-0) made 4 saves in the win.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host Siena Heights.
