Delaware, OH – Alma College Softball was on the road on Saturday, taking on Ohio Wesleyan University in a pair of non-conference games. Alma was victorious in both games, winning 9-2, and 4-0.
Alma 9, Ohio Wesleyan 2
With the games originally being home contests for Alma, before forecasted rain forced a location change, the Scots were the home team in the first game. Alma got on the board first, scoring in the bottom of the 1
st inning. A
Peyton Fether sac bunt saw the throw get away from the OWU pitcher, allowing her to reach safely, and
Jordyn Porter to score. Leading 1-0,
Reneigh Sandmann was able to score off a
Sophia Somerset groundout to first base, making it 2-0. The Scots would add a third run in the inning on another groundout, this one coming from the bat of
Julia Duncan to score Fether from third.
Ohio Wesleyan was able to tack on a pair of runs to fight back in the 2
nd inning, but it was all the scoring that
Morgan Westall would allow the hosts in game one. A 2
nd inning Bishop error allowed two more runs to score for Alma, giving the Scots some breathing room at 5-2.
In the 4
th, the gap widened as RBI singles from Duncan, Carli Lozmack, and
Natalia Rodriguez pumped the Alma lead up to 8-2. Lozmack singled home one more insurance run in the 6
th, capping the scoring at 9-2.
Duncan and Lozmack led the offense for Alma, each recording multi-hit ballgames.
Westall (3-6) went the distance, striking out five while walking one in the victory.
Alma 4, Ohio Wesleyan 0
In game two the offenses were much quieter. The Scots opened the scoring in the 2
nd when
Jenna Holzinger singled through the left side of the infield, allowing Duncan to scamper home. The lead doubled in the 3
rd on an OWU throwing error, which allowed Fether to get home. Leading 2-0, Alma couldn't strike again until the 6
thinning, when a bases loaded walk from
Jaycie LaValley, and Porter getting struck by a pitch on the very next a-bat forced home a pair of insurance runs to double the lead for the visitors.
The Scots got four runs in the game, but would have needed just one, as the pitching of
Mikaylyn Kenney scattered four base runners, and allowed no runs.
Sandmann led the way offensively, with a hit and two walks.
Kenney (5-3) struck out a pair while walking one in the win.
Alma is next in action on Tuesday at Baldwin Wallace, making up a rained out doubleheader from earlier this season.
