Softball Secures Split in Home Opener Against Heidelberg

Alma, MI – Alma College Softball welcomed Heidelberg University to Scots Park on Friday afternoon, marking the 2025 home opener for the Scots. Alma split the day, dropping game one 3-2, before picking up the narrowest of victories in sports in game two, a 1-0 decision.

The Berg hit the scoreboard first in game one, opening the scoring in the third inning with an RBI triple. Leading 2-0, the visitors tacked on another run with an RBI single, pushing the gap to 3-0 after three innings.

It wasn't until the 6th that Alma was able to answer. A Morgan Brandau double to left-center allowed Katelyn Thomas to come around and score to put Alma on the board, and Kylie Halverson was able to scamper home on an infield single off the bat of Julia Duncan.

Trailing 3-2, Alma was able to advance the tying run to third base with two outs, but a groundout ended the rally before it could start.

Brandau led the bats with a 2-3 outing.

Morgan Westall (1-6) pitched all 7.0 innings in the loss. She struck out 10 while walking three.

In game two it was Alma who both started and finished the scoring. The Scots only recorded one hit in the contest, coming off the bat of Brandau. Lily Thompson entered the game as a pinch runner, and was scored later when Carli Lozmack grounded out deep to shortstop.

From there, Mikaylyn Kenney (3-3) was able to scatter several hits from the visitors, securing the shutout victory. The junior struck out six in the win, walking two.

Brandau's base hit accounted for Alma's only base runner in the win.

The Scots look forward to a road twinbill at the 25th against Ohio Northern.
