Softball Splits Doubleheader at Aurora

Montgomery, IL – Alma College Softball was on the road on Saturday, taking on Aurora University in a non-conference doubleheader. Alma was narrowly defeated in game one, before game two saw the Scots offense explode in a resounding win.

Aurora 6, Alma 5
The Spartans scored early and often in the first game, getting on the board in the top of the 1st to lead 1-0. They tacked on three more runs in the 2nd, and another in the 3rd, putting Alma in a 5-0 hole. The Scots offense finally answered on the scoreboard in the 4th inning, when a Jaycie LaValley double scored Carli Lozmack to put Alma on the board. Trailing 5-1, Reneigh Sandmann connected on an RBI single to cut the deficit to three at 5-2. Aurora scored what turned out to be the game winning run in the bottom of the inning, but the Alma bats were able to respond immediately.

Lozmack doubled through the right side to score Lily Thompson in the top of the 5th, and another RBI double from Sophia Somerset scored Lozmack to make a two-run game. In the crunch time, Alma loaded the bases in the 7th. Jordyn Porter managed to cut the gap in half on an infield RBI single, but the comeback was cut short, with Alma falling 6-5.

Porter led with a 2-3 outing, also drawing a pair of walks. Mikaylyn Kenney pitched all 6.0 innings, striking out three.

Alma 12, Aurora 2 (6 Innings)
In game number two, it was Alma who opened the scoring in the 1st, with a sac fly from Peyton Fether scoring Porter to give Alma a 1-0 lead. The Scots doubled their lead when Kendal Holzinger connected on an RBI double to make it 2-0 for the visitors. Still in the 2nd, Emily Dimock scored Holzinger on an RBI single, before Porter slammed a three-run homer to once again double the Alma lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the inning, Aurora managed a pair of runs, the only scoring that the home team produced in the contest.

Bats went quiet until the 6th inning, when the Scots offense exploded for a six-spot. An error allowed a team to score an unearned run, making the score 7-2. Doubles from Sandmann and Somerset moved the score to 10-2, and another Spartan error saw the gap widen to nine runs at 11-2. A Lozmack RBI single capped the scoring at 12-2.

Porter's 3-4 outing led the bats for Alma. Morgan Westall pitched 6.0 innings, striking out five.

Alma looks forward to another road doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace on Thursday.
