Angola, IN – Alma College Women's Basketball competed in a pair of MIAA conference games in the last week. The Scots were defeated by Calvin University on the road, before falling to the conference leading Thunder of Trine on Saturday.
Calvin 58, Alma 40
The Scots scored the opening points of the game on Wednesday before Calvin took an 8-4 lead. Alma battled back to a 9-8 advantage, before Calvin closed on a 6-3 run to lead 14-11 after one quarter. The Knights opened the second quarter on a solid run, increasing their lead to nine points at 22-13 in the first three minutes into the quarter. Alma was able to get back to within two, but Calvin ripped off an 11-0 run en route to a 33-22 lead at halftime.
A pair of layups to start the half put Calvin up 15, and Alma struggled to get back within ten. The quarter was mostly a stalemate, with Alma finally managing to get the lead down to nine at 44-35 after three. Calvin opened the fourth quarter on a defensive mission, keeping Alma to just one made basket during the final period. Struggling from the floor, Alma wasn't able to get back into things, falling 58-40.
Brooke LeRoux (8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) and
Molly Deurloo (7 points, 7 rebounds) were the leaders in the loss.
Trine 80, Alma 61
On Saturday Alma traveled to nationally ranked Trine to continue conference play. Trine jumped all over Alma early, taking a 14-4 lead. However, it was the Scots who closed on a 15-6 run after heating up from the floor to trail by one point after the first quarter. In the early goings of the second quarter, Trine made an attempt to pull away, with Alma refusing to let the Thunder get away. As Alma battled, the Scots finally broke through into the lead at 35-33 with a minute to go in the second quarter. The lead changed hands several times, and it was Trine who took a lead into the locker room at 38-35.
Out of halftime, Trine went on a 12-5 run, pushing their lead out to 10 with over 6-minutes to go. The Thunder went on to score 11 unanswered, leading by 21 with three and a half minutes to go. Trine led by 17 after three quarters. The fourth quarter was back and forth. Trine wasn't able to pull further away, but Alma failed to cut the deficit down, falling by a final of 80-61.
