Women's Basketball Upended by Saint Mary's

Alma, MI – Alma College welcomed the Belles of Saint Mary's College in for an MIAA conference matchup. The Scots were defeated by a final of 66-62.
The Belles jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, leading 12-7 after the opening four minutes and change. The Belles would pile on another 5-0 run, leading by 10 before Alma scored again. The teams traded baskets for the remaining minutes, with the Scots holding the Belles advantage to 10 points, down 22-12 at the end of the first quarter. Alma struggled to hold the Belles in check from beyond the arc, with SMC seemingly refusing to miss three pointers. After trailing by 13, the Scots ripped off a 7-0 run to drop the gap down to 6 at 25-19. However, Alma was unable to get inside of a two-possession game, and the Belles were able to pull away again, leading by 11 at the half.

Saint Mary's opened the third quarter with a made three, threatening to run away with the game. Once again the Scot held on, going basket for basket with the visitors. In the end, the quarter was a stalemate, and the Belles led by 11, 55-44. Opening the fourth quarter, Alma managed to back within eight points in the first three minutes. The opposition scored four straight to lead by 12, a lead that looked insurmountable. A late charge by Alma saw the Scots get within three points with under 10 seconds to go, but the hosts fell just shy of completing the comeback.

Molly Deurloo (15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) Cadence Kaminske (13 points) and Brooke LeRoux (9 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals) were the key contributors in the loss.

Alma looks to Wednesday when they host Kalamazoo to bounce back.
