Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball continued MIAA league play this week, traveling to The University of Olivet on Wednesday, before welcoming rival Albion College on Saturday. The Scots swept the week, moving their win streak to four games.
Alma 58, Olivet 44
The game opened slowly on the offensive side for both teams, with shooting from the floor under 25% between both teams. Olivet led early, getting out to a 9-5 lead. However, Alma closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to keep things level at 11-11 after the first quarter. The Scots took the lead to open the second quarter at 13-11, but the Comets proved hard to shake. The hosts were able to force a tie at 18-18 halfway through the period, and even led 20-18 with under three minutes to play. Once again, the Scots closed out a quarter strong, putting together a 7-0 run to lead 25-20 at halftime.
Out of halftime, the visitors extended their lead to seven at 27-20 off the bat. Both teams suffered a scoring drought from the floor that lasted nearly four minutes, with an Olivet field goal breaking the ice to cut Alma's lead to 28-23. The hosts managed to hang around four to seven points behind Alma, before yet another strong close saw the Scots go up 11 at 39-28 after three quarters. In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Alma blew the game wide open, leading by as much as 17. Despite the best efforts of the Comets to get back into things, Alma ran out 14-point winners.
Molly Deurloo (16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks)
Emmerson Goodin (16 points, 14 rebounds, 6 steals) and
Madelyn Weber (10 points, 13 rebounds) were the top contributors in the win.
Alma 76, Albion 61
Saturday's game featured a more than solid opening for Alma. The Scots scored the game's first eight points, and held Albion off the scoreboard for more than four minutes. The great defensive play of the Scots allowed them to lead 13-3 with just over a minute remaining, and 16-8 after the first quarter. Albion seemingly woke their offense up after the slow start, dropping the gap as low as four points at 19-14. With the Brits hanging around, Alma ripped off a 14-0 run late in the period to go up 20 points at 38-18, and the Scots led 41-23 at the break.
The Brits got off to an ideal start in the third quarter, a period where they would outscore the Scots 20-17. However, a theme started to emerge, with Albion starting to reel Alma back in, only for the hosts to pull back ahead to safety. As Alma held off each lunge from Albion, the momentum swings could be felt more profoundly. Alma survived the best punches from Albion with a 15-point lead to take into the final period. The Scots were able to trade baskets in the final period, going blow-for-blow with their rivals to take home a 15-point win at 76-61.
Brooke LeRoux (21 points, 4 rebounds)
Emmerson Goodin (13 points, 9 rebounds) and
Breckyn Werner (12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists) were the leaders in the victory.
The W over Olivet is the 13
th straight for Alma in the head-to-head series, and their 15-point win over Albion is the largest margin of victory for Alma over the Brits since 2008.
