Werner Leads as Women's Basketball Scores Dominant Win Over Hiram

The senior collected 14 points and 15 rebounds in the win

Hiram, OH – Alma College Women's Basketball was on the road on Wednesday evening, taking on Hiram College in non-conference action. The Scots were victorious by a final of 89-62.

Hiram scored the opening points of the contest, converting a layup 40 seconds into the contest. That 2-0 lead was the only lead that the Terriers would hold throughout the evening. Kate Starkey converted a three-point-play minutes later to put Alma up 3-2, and the Scots never looked back. Alma raced out to a 12-6 advantage halfway through the first quarter, and extended their advantage to 22-13 after one. Hiram held on in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the Alma offense caught fire. The Scots built out the margin to 34-23 at the halfway mark of the period, and finished on a 14-8 run to close the first half with a 48-31 lead.

Alma opened the second half on an 8-3 run to push their lead as high as 22 points. A Terrier mini-run was able to keep Hiram within touching distance, as the home side trailed 56-41 midway through the third quarter. As the Alma offense continued to put points on the board, Hiram kept the gap under 20, with the visitors leading 68-49 after three quarters. By the midway point in the fourth quarter, the Scots offensive performance had put the game away, with Alma leading 80-58, and the road team who pulled away to a dominant 27-point victory, the final score 89-62.

Alma dominated Hiram inside, outscoring the Terriers 50-18 in the paint, and winning the rebounding battle 46-17. The Scots also shot 57% from the floor, and 46% from three.

Cadence Kaminske led the scorers on the night, with 23 points and a pair of rebounds. Kate Starkey collected 22 points and nine assists, along with three steals. However, Breckyn Werner was the star of the evening, with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds. The senior also collected five assists and three steals in the win.
