Alma, MI - Alma College Women's Basketball was in action on Friday night, hoting Otterbein University in non-conference action. In a tight defensive contest, Alma edged the Cardinals 54-46.
Points were hard to come by in the first half. It took the Scots nearly five minutes to find their first make of the game, but strong defense held the hosts in the game. Eventually the Scots offense found their footing, and started to score. It was freshman Kate Starkey who was the catalyst, with several highlight plays to get things moving. Alma held a narrow 24-21 edge at halftime.
The third quarter stayed close. Although Otterbein rallied and briefly seized a lead of 38-37 heading into the fourth, Alma responded in the largest moments. A key three-pointer from Starkey reclaimed momentum, and the Scots widened their advantage down the stretch, converting offensively, and at the charity stripe. Alma's defense also worked wonders, with Otterbein struggling from deep all game, just 1-14 from three. In the end, the Scots ran out 54-46 winners.
Starkey led the way for Alma with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and knocked down two threes. Wisniewski added 10 points with 4 rebounds, while Werner chipped in 7. The Scots shot 43.2 % overall and 40 % from beyond the arc.
The win improves Alma to 2-4 on the season, and the Scots will be back in action on November 25th, when they make the trip to Oberlin College. TIp off is set for 5 PM.
