St. John Becomes All-Time Passing Leader as Football Rolls Past Trine

Angola, IN - Alma College football continued MIAA conference play on Saturday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 42-28 road victory over Trine University.

The Scots came out firing to open the game, finding the end zone on their first five drives of the game. Quarterback Carter St. John opened the scoring with a fourth down 24-yard touchdown pass to Zach Poff, before Eddie Williams powered in a pair of rushing touchdowns, split by a Thunder scoring drive, to give Alma a 21-7 lead after one quarter.

In the second quarter, St. John found the endzone with his legs, breaking free for a 28-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 28-14. After a Trine turnover, Williams then capped the scoring in the half with his third rushing score of the day, sending Alma into the locker room ahead 35-14.

Trine managed to cut into the margin early in the third, scoring on the first drive of the second half, but Alma again answered, thanks in large part to a dominant display from the offensive line unit. Williams found the end zone for a fourth time midway through the quarter, extending the Scots' advantage to 42-21. His fourth score of the day ties Alma's single-game record for rushing touchdowns by an individual. The Thunder added a late touchdown in the fourth, but Alma's defense held strong down the stretch to seal the victory.

St. John led the offense through the air, completing 20-of-27 passes for 278 yards and one touchdown, while also adding 41 rushing yards and a score. Williams spearheaded the ground attack with 173 rushing yards and four TDs on 28 carries. Poff paced the receiving corps with five receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Preston Marlatt led the charge with 12 total tackles, and the Scots gained key interceptions from Ryan Kugelman and Emillio Riley.

The Scots return home to take on Kalamazoo College next week, and will celebrate their seniors pregame.
