Alma, MI – Alma College Men's Soccer rounded out their non-conference schedule on Wednesday evening when they welcomed in the Crusaders of Great Lakes Christian College. Alma was victorious by a final of 3-0.
The first half was a feeling out process for both sides, with neither team putting together many serious scoring opportunities. The Scots were able to get solid build up play on multiple occasions, but only managed two shots before halftime, with the teams locked at 0-0 at the break.
Out of the halftime intermission the pitch seemed to tilt, and it was all Scots until the final whistle. Alma outshot GLCC 12-4 in the second half, and earned three corner kicks to the Crusader's one. Alma finally broke through in the 65
th minute, when the Great Lakes keeper came out to the half to play the ball, but it ended up on the foot of
JJ Riggsby. The senior midfielder launched the ball from over the halfway line, and it doinked off the right post and in. With the Scots leading 1-0, Alma turned up the pressure.
The home side broke through again in the 71
st, when
Kaiden Link worked his way into the box, and sent a cross on a line to the foot of
Christian Sweis. The senior sent it rocketing into the back of the net to double the Alma lead. The Washington, MI native would strike again in the 84
th to cap the scoring at 3-0 Alma.
Hayes Kavanagh started in goal, saving the lone shot on target from GLCC, who drops to 3-5-1.
The Scots move to 5-4-1 with the win, and look forward to their MIAA opener next Tuesday against Kalamazoo College. The Hornets come in at 2-5-1.
