Women's Basketball Dropped by #18 Trine

Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball welcomed the nationally ranked Trine Thunder to Art Smith Arena on Wednesday night to continue MIAA conference play. In a low scoring effort, the Scots were defeated 60-38.

Defenses prevailed often in the early going, with scoring coming slow for both sides to start the game. The teams battled to a 6-6 deadlock midway through the frame, but Trine closed well with an 11-3 run to lead 17-9 after the first quarter. Made shots became increasingly hard to come by in the second quarter for both teams. The Thunder continued to hold Alma's offense in check, and the Scots slowed the scoring momentum of the visitors down. Trine was able to maintain their lead despite this, and held a 27-16 lead over the Scots at halftime.

Out of the half, the Thunder slowed Alma's offensive momentum to a halt. Excellent defending from the visitors forced a number of tough shots from the hosts that didn't fall. The scoring drought lasted nearly eight minutes, and allowed Trine to pile up a 23-point lead. The Scots finally lifted the lid with a Molly Deurloo layup, which ignited the Alma offense. After being held scoreless for most of the quarter, the home five piled on 11 points in the final two minutes, trimming five off the Trine lead. After three, Alma trailed 45-27.

In the final period, Alma kept within touching distance of Trine in the early going, but the Thunder managed to pull away to a 60-38 final score.

Breckyn Werner (11 points, 8 rebounds) Molly Deurloo (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and Emmerson Goodin (4 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals) were the leaders in the loss for Alma.

The Scots are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Saint Mary's.
