Albion, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was on the road on Saturday, continuing MIAA conference play at Albion College. Despite a strong effort, the Scots faltered in the final minutes, losing 66-57.
The game opened with strong defense from both sides, and Albion leading in the early going. The hosts led 6-2 with under five minutes in the opening quarter, before the scoring picked up for Alma. The Scots closed the period on a 10-6 run to have the game level at 12-12 after the first.
Alma took their first lead of the second quarter immediately, with
Emmerson Goodin knocking down a free throw to get the Scots a 13-12 advantage. The two teams jockeyed for position, trading buckets, and swapping the lead several times in the process. Albion was able to open up what would be the largest lead of the game until the final minutes, closing out the quarter strong to hold a seven point, 30-23 lead at the half.
Alma scored the opening points of the second half when
Brooke LeRoux knocked down a three pointer, cutting the Briton lead to four. The Scots made quick work of the Albion advantage, dropping the deficit to one at 34-33 four minutes in to the quarter. The scoring slowed in the waning minutes, with the teams headed to the fourth quarter tied at 41-41.
The hosts scored the opening points of the final period, and Alma just couldn't regain the lead. The Scots were doing more than enough to keep the gap from getting any larger than three, but just couldn't find the go-ahead make until the 4:20 mark, however the Brits took the lead right back, going on to defeat the Scots by nine, the final 66-57.
Emmerson Goodin (19 points, 4 rebounds)
Brooke LeRoux (10 points, 7 rebounds), and
Breckyn Werner (7 points, 9 rebounds) were the key contributors in the loss.
Alma returns to action on January 8
th, when they take on nationally ranked Trine University at home.
